Dear Students and Parents,

I am so excited to welcome all of you to the new 2009-2010 school year! We can all look forward to a year of exploring new material and making friends in Language Arts. Hopefully the following information will answer some of the questions that are surely on your mind as we enter a new year here at Crestwood.

Behavior expectations will conform to the Cavalier Code:

COME PREPARED TO LEARN
·        Arrive on time
·        Bring a binder, paper, pencils, pen, homework, planner, and novel to read
·        Be enthusiastic

MAKE GOOD CHOICES
  • Remain seated
  • Follow directions
  • Listen and participate in class discussions

SHOW RESPECT TO OTHERS, SELF, AND PROPERTY
  • Raise hands to be recognized
  • Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself
  • Borrow items only after asking permission

Cavaliers will be awarded to those students following the Cavalier Code. There will be a menu for Cavalier Redemption posted in the class.

Those who make poor decisions will earn the following consequences:
  1. Warning from Teacher
  2. Student/Teacher Conference
  3. Student Reflection Sheet with Parent/Guardian Contact (detention)
  4. Behavior Referral Sent to the Office
If the problem is serious enough, the student may be sent directly to the office.

Students can expect to be assigned homework Monday through Thursday, and sometimes over a weekend. Homework will be graded based on completion and detail. We will begin each class with a warm up. During class we will be doing plenty of classwork and an occasional project. Students will be quizzed weekly on Word Study and tested occasionally. The following grading policy has been agreed upon by all Crestwood Language Arts teachers.

Instructional Grades                           60%
Assessment Grades                    30%
Homework Grades                               10%

Any Assessment work that is turned in for a grade and earns lower than a 60% will be returned to the student to be redone until he/she achieves a 60% or better. Any interested, motivated student who scores higher than 60% on Assessment work may edit and resubmit their work in order to earn a higher score.

I seek to establish a good working relationship with you as well as with your child. Please call with any questions or concerns. My voice mail is 240-566-9000, ext. 69143 and my email is linda.travis@fcps.org.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Janeen Travis
